History of Zalaszentgyörgy
The name of the village was first mentioned in 1326 in a diploma.
That time it was beneficial land of the Reszneky Family. They have lost it in 1403 because of disloyalty.
That time it was called just Szentgyörgy, after the dragon-killer Saint George. Even a two-wheel mill on the Zala belonged to the lost holding. These were given to Mihály Egervári by king Sigmund.
In 1403 the church had been standing for a long time. The parson was called Thomas.
In 1523 the village was the land of László Kanizsai. There were 26 lands in villain tenure. It belonged to the castle of Egervár.
In 1532 the village was robbed and destroyed by the Turkish army moving to Vienna. Afterwards it was possessed by different overlords.
In 1596 there were 16 houses and the house of the village mayor. After the Bocskay-campaign there were only one inhabited and 6 left houses.
In 1629 the Turks possessed the village. The people paid tax to the pasha of Fehérvár. In 1643 the marauding Turks have robbed and set the village on fire. In 1651 the fled villains have rebuilt it.
In 1664 the Turkish army moving to the battle robbed and destroyed the village again. The church has survived the destruction. In 1676 György Széchenyi archbishop of Kalocsa bought the village.
In 1697 the whole village was in socage. The land was cultivated in two pressures. On the 6th and 7th of November 1706 by the battle of Győrvár it was robbed and set on fire again.
Afterwards it was rebuilt. A sawmill was installed on the stream Szélvíz and the teacher taught 6 children in his newly built house. There was even a pub in the village that time. Fishing lakes were set up in the extern area of the settlement.
At the beginning of the 19th century there were 27 houses, 57 taxpayers and 27 villains. In 1830 belonged Börönd, Kávás, Zél and Cséb to the parish of Szentgyörgy. The patron saint of the church was Saint George knight. The present church was standing even in the 13th century. The name of the patron saint was later brought into connection with the name of the close river Zala. So developed the name Zalaszentgyörgy.
